The South Side was once the place where the wealthiest people in Chicago lived and, this being Chicago, was designed by these same folks to be grander than other parts of the city. The South Side has properties more spectacular than were ever built on Astor Street or anywhere else North or West. Potter Palmer, founder of the Palmer House, designed the grand boulevard system that still exists and makes driving to the Loop so easy. The South Side’s Lakefront is also spectacular and was home to one of the greatest country clubs ever built, now open to all. The transportation infrastructure, most of it built for the 1893 Columbian Exposition held, of course, on the South Side has been modernized and is still first-rate.
